Our New Capture!
Crescent Nebula (NGC 6888)

Emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus.

Apparent magnitude: 7.4

Diameter: 25 light-years

Distance: 5,000 light-years

The Crescent Nebula formed around the star WR 136 as a result of ionization by a fast stellar wind of slower-moving gas ejected by this red giant about 400,000 years ago.

The mass of material expelled over ten thousand years is approximately equal to the mass of the Sun. Such rapid burning of nuclear fuel brings the star closer to the end of its life, which is expected to conclude with a spectacular supernova explosion.

Captured using narrowband filters Ha, OIII, SII.
Total exposure time: 140 minutes.
